Is It Painful to Get Dental Implants?

Posted on 03/10/2024

There is no right or wrong way to answer this question. Simply put, it's likely you will be in some sort of pain from dental implants, but how much pain neither you nor your cosmetic dentist in Diamond Bar can tell. Furumoto Dentistry does its utmost to ensure that the pain is tolerable if you opt to get more than one dental implant. You can discuss pain and treatment options with Dr. Furumoto on your initial visit to the office.

Understanding the Implant Process and Related Pain

Dental implants are very different from Diamond Bar dental crowns. Because a crown just covers a tooth nub and doesn't remove the roots, pain is very minimal, if at all. Compare that to an implant, which starts with an empty space in your mouth and an empty tooth socket.

If the bone and gum tissue has already healed over the empty socket, Dr. Furumoto has to open the gum tissue and create a hole for the abutment screw in your jaw. Your mouth will be numbed during this major surgery, but it's possible you will feel pain after the Novocain wears off later. After the bone and gum tissue around each abutment screw heals, there is no pain, but it might take a few weeks.

Best Case Scenario for Getting Dental Implants

Avoiding surgical drilling and insertion of abutment screws is the ideal for this kind of cosmetic procedure. Ergo, if you have an open tooth socket that hasn't healed yet or you get a tooth pulled, that is the time to get the abutment screw placed. The dentist doesn't have to do much to get the screw into the open socket and pain is lessened because there's already an opening for the screw. If you have to get a dead tooth pulled, consider having a dental implant placed at the same time.

How Much Pain You Might Feel After Surgery

Some patients have a very high pain tolerance. They may feel nothing at all, or only mild twinges of pain. Others who have undergone the same implant surgery may have a much lower pain tolerance and be in agony.

Dr. Furumoto typically suggests ice packs and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication to help with pain. However, if the pain is really bad, you may talk to Dr. Furumoto about getting a prescription short-term for something stronger. It's always best to wait and see how you tolerate any discomfort until a few hours after surgery.

Diamond Bar Dental Crowns as an Option
If you still have teeth in sockets and they can be saved, the cosmetic dentist in Diamond Bar at Furumoto Dentistry will attempt a crown instead. Crowns are less expensive than implants and they allow you to keep your natural teeth. If the tooth in question is dead and cannot be saved at all, then you can discuss the implant option with Dr. Furumoto.
