Dos and Don’ts of Teeth Whitening
Following the advice listed here will help ensure your whitening treatment has the fullest effect and lasts longer.
- DO keep up on your oral care routine. Good hygiene before your treatment - potentially even a professional cleaning - will maximize the effectiveness of treatment. Continuing your brushing and flossing routine after treatment will extend its life.
- DO watch what you consume. Avoid drinking dark sodas, tea, or coffee, especially directly after a whitening treatment. The same goes for highly acidic foods and foods with a dark pigment to them. If you do decide to eventually drink a darker beverage, use a straw to avoid allowing the liquid direct access to your teeth.
- DO follow the dentist’s instructions. If you choose to do a take-home whitening kit, follow the instructions that are included. If you are receiving in-office treatment, you will be given instructions when you leave.
- DON’T smoke before or after treatment. Smoking in general is a big component of teeth staining, but particularly right before and after your treatment.
- DON’T try to do it on your own. Teeth can be sensitive, and things can go wrong. Additionally, at-home kits are not as strong as our in-office treatments. Not only will you be able to receive professional-grade whitening through our office, but you will also be sure that the application is smooth and consistent, and you will be in the hands of a professional.
